Her father, Ram Mukherjee is a retired director. Her mother Krishna used to be a playback singer, while her brother Raja Mukherjee is a film producer. Her maternal aunt is Debashree Roy. The popular Bollywood actress, Kajol, is her second cousin. Career : She began her film career with the Bengali film Biyer Phool. Her first Hindi film was Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1996), which did not do well at the box office. However, her next two releases - Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) - were India-wide hits.
Achievements : For the latter she received her first Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Mukherji was signed on for a great many movies after these successes. Unfortunately, most of them did average business at the box office. The commercial and critical success of Saathiya in 2002 is widely believed to have revived her career. Mukerji has been romantically linked with actors such as Govinda, Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and most recently, director Aditya Chopra.
Rani was proud to be associated with actor-director Kamal Haasan and was thrilled to have his film 'Hey Ram' in her lap. But the film did not propel her career to the extent she had expected.
